2026 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally
The closest thing to a factory rally bike with number plates
The 2026 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally is the most focused and highest-specification version of KTM’s middleweight adventure platform. While the standard 890 Adventure R is already regarded as one of the strongest off-road motorcycles in its class, the Rally adds competition-derived suspension, stronger wheels, more aggressive ergonomics and premium equipment as standard.
This is not simply an 890 Adventure R with different graphics and an exhaust. It is a limited-production, rally-focused motorcycle designed for experienced riders who want greater control at speed, better suspension performance and hardware capable of handling repeated punishment in demanding terrain.
Engine performance
At the heart of the Rally is KTM’s 889 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, producing approximately 105 PS and 100 Nm of torque. It is the same basic engine used in the standard 890 Adventure R, so the Rally’s advantage does not come from a major increase in horsepower.
Instead, KTM has concentrated on helping the rider use that performance more effectively. The engine provides strong low and mid-range torque, making it easy to lift the front wheel over obstacles, drive through deep sand and maintain momentum on steep climbs. It is powerful without being overly aggressive, which is important when traction is limited.
The broad torque spread also means the rider does not need to constantly chase high revs or change gears to keep the motorcycle moving. On loose surfaces, this makes the bike easier to control and less tiring to ride over long distances.
WP XPLOR PRO suspension
The biggest difference between the 890 Adventure R and the Rally is the suspension.
The standard 890 Adventure R uses fully adjustable 48 mm WP XPLOR suspension with 240 mm of travel at both ends. It is a highly capable setup designed to balance off-road performance, comfort, touring ability and everyday use.
The Rally upgrades to WP XPLOR PRO components developed with WP Factory Racing. It receives a WP XPLOR PRO 7548 Cone Valve fork and a WP XPLOR PRO 6746 rear shock, increasing suspension travel to 270 mm at both ends.
The extra 30 mm of travel is only part of the improvement. The Cone Valve fork is designed to remain sensitive over smaller bumps while offering far greater resistance to bottoming on large impacts. The rear shock provides more controlled damping, better traction and improved chassis stability in rough terrain.
How the suspension difference feels
On smooth gravel roads and moderate trails, both motorcycles are extremely capable. The difference becomes much clearer as the terrain gets faster, rougher or more unpredictable.
The standard 890 Adventure R is designed to absorb difficult terrain while remaining comfortable and versatile. The Rally’s suspension is designed to maintain control when the rider begins attacking that terrain rather than simply travelling across it.
At higher speeds, the Rally feels calmer and more composed when the front wheel hits rocks, corrugations, washouts or sharp-edged holes. The fork has more support through its stroke, while the rear shock controls the chassis more precisely under acceleration and during hard landings.
For an experienced rider, this means the ability to brake later, carry more speed and use the engine more aggressively without the motorcycle becoming unsettled as quickly. For less aggressive riders, the benefit is increased stability, traction and control when conditions suddenly become difficult.
More ground clearance
The longer suspension raises the Rally’s ground clearance to approximately 303 mm, compared with 263 mm on the standard 890 Adventure R.
This gives the Rally more room to pass over rocks, logs, ledges, erosion mounds and deep ruts without striking the lower part of the motorcycle. In technical terrain, the extra clearance provides a larger margin for error and allows the rider to choose more direct lines.
The trade-off is seat height. The Rally has a 910 mm seat height, compared with 880 mm on the standard R. That 30 mm increase is significant and may make the Rally harder to manage for shorter riders, less experienced riders or anyone regularly stopping on uneven ground.
Rally seat and ergonomics
The Rally uses a tall, flat, one-piece rally seat with a grippy cover. Its shape allows the rider to slide forward and rearward more freely and makes transitions between sitting and standing faster and more natural.
It also receives wider Factory Racing footpegs. These provide a larger platform for the rider’s boots, improving stability, leverage and comfort when standing for long periods.
The standard R already has excellent off-road ergonomics, but the Rally takes a more competition-focused approach. Its flatter layout encourages the rider to move around the motorcycle and control it through the feet and legs.
During aggressive off-road riding, this makes the Rally feel more natural and allows the rider to shift weight more quickly when cornering, climbing, descending or correcting a slide. The downside is that the taller, firmer layout can be less convenient in traffic or during frequent stops.
Heavy-duty wheels
The standard 890 Adventure R uses 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked tubeless wheels. The Rally uses narrower, heavy-duty off-road rims designed for greater strength and better compatibility with aggressive off-road tyres.
The narrower rims give the tyre a rounder profile, which can improve compliance and traction in rocks, sand and loose terrain. They are also better suited to repeated hard impacts.
The standard R’s tubeless setup is more convenient for touring because many punctures can be repaired without removing the wheel or tyre. The Rally’s tube-type arrangement is more competition focused and may tolerate severe impacts better, but puncture repairs generally require more work and equipment.
Akrapovic titanium exhaust
The Rally is fitted with an Akrapovic titanium silencer, while the standard 890 Adventure R uses a stainless-steel exhaust system.
The Akrapovic unit reduces weight by more than one kilogram and gives the motorcycle a sharper exhaust note. The weight saving is positioned relatively high on the bike, so it can slightly reduce the feeling of top weight and improve direction changes.
The exhaust is also a premium component that many standard 890 Adventure R owners would otherwise add later.
Standard Tech Pack
The Rally includes KTM’s Tech Pack as standard. This includes Rally Mode, Quickshifter+, Cruise Control and Motor Slip Regulation.
On the standard 890 Adventure R, some of these functions may be optional depending on market specification.
Rally Mode
Rally Mode gives the rider ten selectable levels of rear-wheel slip control, plus the option to switch traction control off completely. The rider can also choose different throttle responses.
On hard-packed gravel, more electronic intervention can provide greater stability. In loose gravel, mud or sand, a lower setting allows controlled wheelspin to help steer the bike and maintain momentum.
This adjustability is one of the 890 platform’s strongest features because the rider is not limited to choosing between full traction control and no traction control.
Quickshifter+
Quickshifter+ allows clutchless upshifts and downshifts. Off road, this helps the rider remain balanced on the footpegs while changing gears and reduces fatigue during fast or rough riding.
Motor Slip Regulation
Motor Slip Regulation helps manage excessive rear-wheel slip caused by engine braking. On loose surfaces, a hard downshift can slow the rear wheel too quickly and cause it to lose traction. The system helps reduce that effect and improves stability when entering corners or descending steep terrain.
Cruise control
Cruise control does not improve technical off-road performance, but it makes long highway sections far more comfortable. It allows the rider to relax the throttle hand and reduce fatigue when travelling between trails.
Electronics and rider assistance
The Rally uses a six-axis inertial measurement unit to support its traction-control and cornering ABS systems. The motorcycle continually monitors lean angle and movement, allowing the electronics to adjust intervention according to the bike’s condition.
In Offroad or Rally Mode, Offroad ABS reduces intervention at the front wheel and deactivates ABS at the rear. This allows the rider to lock or slide the rear wheel while still retaining a degree of anti-lock assistance at the front.
This is especially useful when descending loose hills or entering dirt corners, where a controlled rear-wheel slide can help rotate the motorcycle.
Protection and premium equipment
The Rally includes carbon tank guards, a Supersprox-Stealth rear sprocket, rally graphics and a two-colour fuel-tank finish.
The carbon guards help protect the low-mounted fuel tanks, which are a major part of the 890 platform’s design. Carrying fuel low on both sides of the engine lowers the centre of gravity and makes the motorcycle feel more manageable than a conventional high-tank adventure bike.
These parts are not as transformational as the suspension, but they contribute to the Rally’s premium, showroom-ready specification.
Weight and fuel capacity
Both the standard 890 Adventure R and the Rally are listed at approximately 200 kg without fuel and use a 20-litre fuel tank.
This means the Rally retains similar touring range and overall weight. The key difference is how effectively the rider can manage that weight in difficult terrain.
The Rally’s suspension, narrow wheels, flat seat, wider footpegs and extra ground clearance allow the bike to maintain its line more accurately and remain composed when ridden hard.

Which model is the better choice?
The 890 Adventure R remains the better all-round choice for most riders.
It is already extremely capable off road, has a more manageable seat height, uses convenient tubeless wheels and offers a suspension setup that is easier to live with across touring, commuting, gravel roads and technical trails.
The Rally is intended for a more specialised customer. It makes the most sense for an experienced off-road rider who regularly rides quickly in rough terrain, competes in rally-style events or wants premium factory-level components without modifying a standard motorcycle.
A rider who rarely uses all of the standard R’s suspension travel may not gain the full value of the Rally package. The taller seat and tube-type tyres may also make everyday use less convenient.
For a skilled rider, however, the Rally delivers a meaningful improvement. It feels more controlled under heavy impacts, more stable at speed, more resistant to bottoming and more natural when ridden aggressively from a standing position.
Final assessment
The 2026 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally is not simply a more expensive version of the 890 Adventure R. It is a more specialised motorcycle built around premium WP XPLOR PRO suspension and genuine rally-focused components.
The standard 890 Adventure R remains the more practical and accessible option for general adventure riding. The Rally sacrifices some accessibility in exchange for greater capability at the upper end of off-road performance.
Its taller stance, competition-derived suspension, stronger wheels, rally ergonomics and standard Tech Pack create a motorcycle designed for riders who want to push harder, ride faster and tackle more punishing terrain.
For the right rider, the result is one of the most complete and capable production adventure motorcycles available: a machine that combines long-distance touring ability with genuine rally-bred control, strength and performance.
